BIG FLOOD!

Bella Coola River this morning at Noosgulch

Sorry my posting is a bit late...we've been out of power and it just came back on.  This will be short for tonight.  Bella Coola is experiencing a major flood - in excess of the 1968 flood which is the whopper in most residents memories here.  There is much much damage both to roads and bridges and peoples homes.  The full extent is unclear.  Most of us are pinned down by washed out highways or driveways (our case).  More info as it unfolds.  Check the Central Coast Regional District web site - Emergency Notice section.

The rain stopped just after 7 PM and in  my opinion we would need at least 6 hours for the crest to show.  At 1 AM it has definitely slowed on the rising side at our place, but not stopped yet.  Good luck everyone in the Valley.

  2. We have been watching the news about your area. Hope everything works out for you and your community without too much damage. The rain we have been getting in the Prince George area pales in comparison I'm sure.

  5. I visited family in Hagensborg/Bella Coola this past August. It was just beautiful.

Yesterday they sent me a video and many pics of the Bella Coola area showing the flooding roads, raging Clayton falls and other areas. I can't imagine what all of the families there are going through. I've heard that some are being evacuated.

Our prayers and thoughts are with all of you.

  6. Hi,
I'm a Saloompt resident visiting the states. Thank you for your posts. I've been checking it all day to find out the latest.

Could you please let me know if the bridges are intact? I'm mostly concerned about Baily Bridge.

Thanks & I hope you and yours' are getting through this difficult time.

Let me know if I can bring you anything when I fly in next week.

  7. Thinking of all my old friends in the valley. I have been following the FB postings and photos from valley dwellers. Very scarey indeed. Hope all are safe, dry and fed. The clean up work will be daunting. All the best.

  9. We were just discussing driving up there again, and I told my partner, "The road is good, all the way, now."

    Spoke too soon.

I hope it's reached its peak by now. Incredible damage!

  12. MGH: The Bailey bridge is still there, but the road to it is gone. Saloompt residents are trapped. Sorry.

  13. Who knows what the total number of home that were destroyed or rendered unoccupiable.

How is the provincial government's compensation program? Is it fair?

Are people being allowed to re-build in areas that were flooded?

I know the valley fairly well and am considering moving there permanently and want a better idea of how things are going generally after the flood.

    Thanks

  14. Initially it was reported around 120 homes were affected by the flood in some way. The vast majority are repairable or already well on the way to being repaired or just basements and crawl spaces damaged. The Central Coast Regional District web site has the most information about the disaster process. I'm not aware of any comments on the disaster program. Grizzly
