The End -- or The Beginning?

Like most people in Bella Coola I've watched a lot of salmon come and go and the rivers get full of nice vibrant spawning fish, then over a short period of time turn into a scene like today's photo.  It's natural to tend to think of it as the end for the run, but it really is just the beginning, when you realize how much new life has just been started and then you see some of the fat bellied grizzly bears this year and all the gulls and merganser and other critters enjoying the bounty.  With peak spawning a few weeks back, comes peak smell a week or two later, and I'm happy that the morning smells as you drive through the still air are starting to dwindle now.  Grizzly

  1. Hi Grizzly,

I peek in at your blog on a regular basis, and thought I'd say "howdy". I am a Southern California boy, born and raised, but I am attracted to your spot on the planet. Tried unsuccessfully to convince my wife to consider a change of lifestyle. Oh well.

Just wanted to say I appreciate getting a glimpse of your world. Thanks for the posts. Maybe in another lifetime I could call it home. If only we are so lucky to get a chance to revisit this wonderful life...

    Thanks again. Eric

  2. Thank you for your comments. You can always come up for a visit. May to August offer some great scenery and usually better weather and it's not a very commercially touristy place, just real genuine and friendly. Grizzly

  3. Thanks for your posts! I hope you will comment on the strength of the coho run this fall. This year's returning fish should have been spawned in the shadow of the great flood of 2010. The conventional wisdom is there shouldn't be many coho this year, but it will be interesting to see if nature can find a way. As I understand, last year's pink returns were weak (also spawned in 2010). However, the pink eggs should have been in the gravel when the flood occured and likely washed out, the coho were probably yet to spawn. I hope you will post something this fall once the true strength of the run can be assessed.
