Roots
A good example of the role that the roots of the Cottonwood trees play along the banks of the creeks and rivers. These roots were exposed in the recent freshet and give you an idea of the network of roots the cottonwood put down when they are looking for water to feed their massive hulk. Grizzly

Black cottonwoods are amazing trees. They are massive biological water pumps, drawing up and storing nutrient rich water, then returning the nutrients back to the ecosystem slowly over time. I can not resist the alluring odour of cottonwoods in the spring - intoxicating.
ReplyDeleteGreat photo of the roots. The root zone is an area we rarely get to see, but there is a lot going on underground.
