Devil's Club

Plants are late, but catching up rapidly as temperatures bump up and down a bit and day length increases.  The Devil's Club (Oplopanox horridum) needs to grow fast to catch up. These leaves while only 12-15 cm across now, will be 30-45 cm across when the plants are mature and berries ripen in July.

The weather in the Bella Coola Valley was an improvement from yesterday, but only because is wasn't a cold rain all day.  No sun was seen, but lots of fresh snow on the mountains.  Grizzly

  1. Okay, this comment is not really anything about devil's club though I have foolishly strayed into patches of it in the early days of my living in the rain-forest. I just needed some place to butt in to say how happy I was to somehow stumble into this blog. I lived in Bella Coola 1997-2002 and worked for the Tribal Council (then Oweekeno-Kitasoo-Nuxalk) as well as served a term on the CCRD and was a regular contributor to the Coast Mountain News, from the notorious Grouse's Perch. My family and I sadly moved to smelly Prince George in 2002 so that I could do some work at UNBC. I could go on (those who knew the Grouse's Perch would nod grimacing)...but won't. Again, just delighted to discover this blog and anxious to follow it.
